St-Martin Trip Tips

The island of Saint Martin is an ideal destination for families, sports lovers, party lovers or for couples.

The island offers a multitude of things to do and places to see, to suit everyone’s taste and satisfy every desire.

A perfect week on St. Martin

Day 1

fort louis st martinWith a rich history and culture, the island of Saint Martin is absolutely full of sites to see!
For this first day, a stop at Bellevue is a must so you can admire the border obelisk, the symbol of the coexistence of two nations.
Then stop at the botanical garden where the Rastafarian community grows fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants, some that are local to the region and some from farther afield. It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect with Nature and learn about all the good that it can do you.
Your fully awakened senses will lead you then to the Marigot market, with its many colours and then on the “lolos”, typical Saint-Martin restaurants where you’ll be served grilled snapper with rice and peas.
Discover the town’s Creole houses, its art galleries and museum “On the path of the Arawaks”, and don’t forget the famous Fort Louis, overlooking Marigot’s bay and Anguilla since 1789.
In the evening, get pampered in one of the island’s many spas and beauty institutes, then finish off the day on a delicious note at one of the restaurants in the Marina Port La Royale.

Day 2

mardis grand case saint martinNothing like a morning walk in the Saint-Martin National Nature Reserve to start the day off right!
Then follow the “Sentier des Froussards” path from Anse Marcel to Cul-de-Sac.
Halfway there, you can stop off at the beach in Petites Cayes for a dip in the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean and enjoy the absolute calm of the spot.
Continue your walk all the way to the northern tip of the island, the most natural area on Saint-Martin, and discover the local flora and fauna, in real life and on the information signs posted along the path.
Once you reach Cul-de-Sac, take the ferryboat to Pinel Island and enjoy some grilled lobster at one of the beach-side restaurants. Young and old alike will be enchanted by this little bit of paradise that offers relaxation by the water’s edge or more exciting activities such as diving.
At the end of your day, watch the sun set over the water from a restaurant terrace at Grand-Case, known as the Caribbean capital of gastronomy, then dance to the rhythm of the streets with the events that liven up the village from January to April during Tuesdays in Grand-Case.

Day 3

loterie farm st martinAfter a breakfast of a delicious Journey cake and an herbal tea in the heart of Marigot, give in to the allure of shopping with the duty-free prices in the luxurious boutiques of the shopping capital; you’ll find souvenirs for your loved ones and surely a little something for yourself!
For lunch, try the tapas at the Loterie Farm at the foot of Pic Paradis, the highest point on the island at 424 m, home to the only secondary tropical forest on Saint-Martin. The site is a haven of peaceful green and has many trails as well as a natural spring-fed pool and a zip-linning course to get your adrenaline flowing.
Any creative members of your party will enjoy a trip to Tijon Parfumerie in Grand-Case where they can create their own perfume from 300 essential oils in the boutique.

Day 4

tintamarre st martinWhether you take a catamaran or a motorboat, a trip over the waves is a must on Saint Martin!
Start by calling at Creole Rock, part of the Saint Martin National Nature Reserve. Its shallow waters, open to all and well protected, make it one of the most beautiful spots for diving and snorkelling on the island.
Then head towards Tintamarre, the tiniest bit of natural land, only 100 hectares, with no human inhabitants and only a few traces of the airfield that was constructed there during World War II, a tiny railroad and a cotton plantation. You can admire the view of Saint Martin’s lush green hillsides from the beautiful beach of Baie Blanche.
Once you’re back on the boat, watch the horizon and you might see some green sea turtles, a school of dolphins or humpback whales which migrate through our warm waters at certain times of the year.
For the evening, make your way to the 5-star luxury hotel located in Terres Basses, an establishment known for its 12,000 bottle cellar including the finest wines from around the world. The perfect place to enjoy fine dining in an exceptional setting.

Day 5

butterfly farm st martinMore than just an island, Saint-Martin is also where two nations live side by side!
A visit to Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side, will help give you a better feel for the atmosphere on the island. Its many shops, the Courthouse and the breathtaking view of the bay with all the cruise ships docked in the port will surely all make a big impression.
In late morning, the Butterfly Farm opens wide the doors of its stunning tropical garden where the finest specimens of innumerable species of butterflies from around the world flit from branch to branch.
After that unusual visit, for lunch try heading to Orient Bay, where you’ll find the longest beach on the island, nicknamed the Saint Tropez of the Caribbean. Jet skiing, parasailing, sea kayaking, windsurfing or even kite surfing, this beach has all sorts of water sports, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
At nightfall, make reservations at a table in one of the restaurants in Marina Fort Louis for a quiet dinner looking out over the lit up yachts.

Day 6

horse riding st martinFor your last day, why not try horseback riding from the beach in Galion? This outdoor jaunt will take you through the “mornes“, the hills that are typical of the geography of the region, and give you a chance to discover the wildest corners of the island. You can also experience the most picturesque of rides, galloping along the beach and leading your trusty mount all the way to the water’s edge.
After making loads of wonderful memories, you can go back to your favourite restaurant for lunch before taking a dip at Friar’s Bay Beach, this magnificent little cove protected from the waves and lined with various trees.
To finish the day, let yourself be rocked by the sound of the waves and the dying light of the sunset or simply enjoy the moment and get some well-deserved rest at the hotel, then tempt your taste buds with some traditional spicy dishes from the island.
