BILL FISH TOURNAMENT 2010
What a tournament!
The five-day event, which takes place each year on the Marigot waterfront, attracted hundreds of visitors and spectators, as well as participants just happy to have experienced the adrenaline rush of an ocean quest.
It was clear that not only the desire to bring home the biggest catch, but also a longing to secure the tournament’s place as one of the finest sailing events in the Caribbean was in the minds of spectators and competitors alike.
The opening day of this 13th Tournament saw Cassinoha and its Cadisco crew beat the famous record of 2002 by reeling in an 809-pound marlin, 28 pounds heavier than the previous record.
This exciting catch threw the tournament wide open, and the crews of Ti-Mamzell from Guadeloupe, Ali-Bambam from Saint Barths and Rum n’ Coke pulled out all the stops in a closely-fought and very sporting Billfish in the waters around the island. As ever, the return of the boats to the shores of Marigot was a truly unforgettable moment, as spectators admired the catch and the joy of the sailors with their winnings.
On Sunday, the final day of the competition, the rain held off for a few moments for the closing festivities.
The crew of Ali-Bambam brought back a fine 619-pound marlin, which was admittedly short of the record, but nonetheless earned them the prize for the biggest fish of the event, presented at a lavish award ceremony on the Billfish podium, in the presence of Claude Liégeon, Secretary-General of the Prefecture, Albéric Ellis, Ports Authority Director for the Collectivity, and of course the happy President of the Marlin Bleu association, François Anton, who thanked the crews and the public for their participation over the five days of Billfish 2010.
At the ceremony Cassinoha was presented with a $20,000 cheque for beating the record, while Rum n’ Coke snapped up the $5,000 first prize.
The 13th Billfish Tournament was enthusiastically organised by Calypso Events on behalf of the Marlin Bleu association and its dynamic team. The Saint Martin Tourist Office, remained a constant presence from the start, and collaborated closely with the association on this project. The Billfish Tournament brought us friendly, cultural, musical and generally festive evenings at a scenic and remarkable new site, Marlin Boulevard, where spectators oohed and aahed and soaked up the festival ambiance.
Some might say it was too short! The Billfish Tournament is a celebrated annual event that should continue its efforts to bring the joys of the sea, its beautiful catches and some of the cultural and musical traditions we like on Saint Martin to the public. Thank you to the organisers.
Bring on the 14th Billfish Tournament!
